Essay concerning the development of playing cards and the history of popular card games, including substantial footnotes digressing into French history and fashion. This appears to be the original manuscript of the book of the same name published in 1757. The manuscript is holograph, with a number of corrections. At the end is a note in a different hand, signed "Gibert", sanctioning the text for publication. On the last page is a signature of "M. Guerin", possibly the owner of a bookshop. Included with this manuscript, but likely related only due to its association with playing cards, is a single manuscript leaf (folded), beginning "Aux citoyens administrateurs du departement de leure. . .", which is a plea from Marie Françoise Madeleine Douyère for the release of the possessions of her late brother's estate, one Jaque Cleosas Douyère, dated [1796 Jul 11]. The manuscript is written on paper watermarked for playing cards. Included are a later transcript and an English translation of the text.
